Rachel Lutz was raised in Detroit and its suburbs, and as a child frequently visited her parents’ shop in the Fisher Building. She grew up fascinated by the glamorous fashions of old Detroit.
After an early career in political action, journalism, and social justice, Lutz opened her first retail store in 2011 in the Park Shelton building with a credit card and a dream. She had grown tired of seeing declining customer service and limited size availability for women. Lutz believed in the power of brick-and-mortar retail to help women of all sizes feel confident and beautiful in what they wear.
"A trip to The Peacock Room is truly a magical experience. From the moment you walk in the door and are greeted by a member of the staff, you are made to feel like they’ve been waiting just for you. There is such attention to detail in the way each treasure is displayed, and the architecture of the boutique itself feels like you have entered another time and place." - Wendy, Detroit.
"Had a FABULOUS shopping experience yesterday. Rachel and Sarah went out of their way to help me find clothes that fit. This is why I love to shop locally! These ladies have great products, provide amazing customer service and really care about what they do. Shop local! Thanks, ladies! "-Suzanne, Detroit.
"Ladies, you must go check out the Peacock Room. They have everything from beautiful new ball gowns and vintage hats to vulgar teacups and sparkly accessories. It’s the best store if you need something special for you or one of your favorite girls." - Tami, Southgate.

FAQs--The Peacock Room Expansion
November 2023--Detroit entrepreneur Rachel Lutz is expanding The Peacock Room brand in her Park Shelton and Fisher Building stores, beginning gradually this holiday season with a projected Spring completion. To accomplish this, Lutz plans to absorb the Yama and Frida boutiques under The Peacock Room nameplate.
Q: Is the Peacock Room still Detroit’s “Destination for Dresses?”
A: Yes, we are just uniting everything under The Peacock Room brand.
Q: When is this change happening?
A: We’ll begin gradually this holiday season and expect completion in the Spring.
Q: Why are you making this change?
A: The Peacock Room needed more room. Our demand for dresses continues to climb as customers aren’t finding what they need online or in cookie-cutter department stores. This will streamline our operations more efficiently, and our Yama and Frida customers will still find their aesthetic within our shops, just now under The Peacock Room name.
Q: Will I still be able to find my favorite bohemian casual and modern contemporary favorites like I used to at Yama and Frida?
A: Our Yama and Frida customers will still find their aesthetic within our shops, just now under The Peacock Room name.
Q: What’s the big change at the Fisher Building?
A: The Yama space across from The Fisher Theater will transition to The Peacock Room home and gift gallery, and include special seasonal features. The Fisher flagship will be refocused into all apparel and accessories.
Q: And at the Park Shelton?
A: The space known as Frida will now house The Peacock Room’s daytime looks, with the interior lobby store expanding its selection of cocktail and formal attire.
Q: How big is The Peacock Room now?
A: 7,800 square feet of retail space spread across two greater downtown Detroit locations, the Park Shelton and The Fisher Building.
Q: What’s happening this holiday season?
A: The idea of this expansion has inspired Rachel to hunt harder for the most interesting and unique finds for Detroit’s holiday shoppers. Combine that with our modern example of exceptional department store service, and The Peacock Room will continue to deliver the unexpected.
Q: Will you still do Facebook Live and other pop-up events?
A: Even more! Watch our social media pages and our website for our event listings and new online offerings.
